My book, Tourists of History: Memory, Kitsch, and Consumerism from Oklahoma City to Ground Zero, explores the intersection of cultural memory, tourism, consumerism, paranoia, security, and kitsch that has defined American culture over the past two decades, looking specifically at the two primary outcomes of the Oklahoma City bombing (the Oklahoma City National Memorial and the execution of Timothy McVeigh) and at the consumerism and debates about memorialization and architecture in the aftermath of 9/11. The book argues that we respond to national trauma in the US through consumerism, kitsch sentiment, and tourist practices in ways that reveal a tenacious investment in the concept of innocence in American culture.
